USA New York
Welcome
During a meeting of the EUNIC in USA New York cluster, in June 2010, both strategic and practical projects were discussed among members for the new presidential mandate. Thus, it was agreed that the strategic objective of EUNIC New York should be to act along three key lines: as a think tank (becoming a stronger voices and advocate for issues of common interest to its members, such as facilitating the obtention of U.S. visas for European artists); as a catalyst, by including under EUNIC umbrella already existing projects with a substantial European component (e.g. the European Book Club project - initiated by the cultural institutes of six EU countries in 2008, now enlarged to 10 countries; The New Literature for Europe Festival - initiated in 2004 by five European cultural institutes and grown to seven in 2010); and as initiator of globally relevant projects (e.g.: Perpetual Peace project) or European relevant projects in the U.S. (EuropARTus initiated by RCINY- an online magazine in collaboration with NYU on the presence of European artists in NYC or "FAQ Serbia" initiated by ACFNY- a comprehensive project about the "culturalization of political and economic conflict" and Serbia's process towards E.U. membership).
EUNIC in USA New York also agreed on commenting upon consistent materials to be circulated among members and organize ad hoc meetings with experts (e.g. Rod Fisher's summary on ‘From Cultural Diplomacy to Cultural co-operation”).
In 2010, a website for the New York EUNIC Cluster will also be developed and a line of networking activities will be pursued, to include smaller groups like Central and Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean countries.

New York Times: EUNIC a champion of Literary Translation
“For nations in Europe, be they small or large, literature will always be one of the keys of their cultural existence. We have established as a strategic objective, a long-term commitment to break through the American market”, said Corina Suteu, representative of EUNIC in USA New-York and director of the Romanian Cultural Institute NY, to the New York Times (8 December 2010 edition).
Perpetual Peace: more than a project
The Perpetual Peace Project (16 November 2009-9 january 2010) in New York is predicated on the belief that no single institution or individual can clearly claim or guarantee a mastery of the concept of peace. Today, as in Kant’s time, the concept of peace remains abstract and continues to be defined negatively as an absence of war. For this reason the project takes on initiatives within multiple institutions, to create the conditions for proposing yet again the idea of peace.
New York: Serbia in the spotlights
From 23 September 2010 to 9 January 2011, EUNIC in USA New York under the co-ordination of the Austrian Cultural Forum focuses on Serbia in contemporary art. On one hand, the title of this new exhibition, Serbia – Frequently asked questions, alludes to a multitude of questions and ambiguities Europe and the world have regarding today’s Serbia. On the other hand, positive expectations are also part of the equation.
New European literature meets American audience
Today’s Europe is a fascinating convergence of old and new, with high speed trains roaring past thousand-year-old towns. The past and present are never far away from each other, and this year’s New Literature from Europe festival in New York (16-18 November) explored this proximity by presenting some of the most powerful recent works of fiction by eight of the most important contemporary European authors.
