EUNIC raises funds for Haiti with a benefit concert in Berlin
Over €7,000 was raised for the victims of the Haiti earthquake by an EUNIC initiated multicultural benefit concert at the Berlin House of World Cultures on 9 February.
An audience of over 500 enjoyed the music of performers from four countries covering a broad musical horizon. Gerardo Núñez , a Spanish guitarist and composer with musical roots in flamenco, but he threads other musical paths like jazz as well. Haitian performer Karlex Antoine calls his music afro groove: a blend of energetic rhythm guitar and bass with afro drumming, classic soul, funk and reggae influences revisited by an electro touch. He sings in Creole, English and French. His last album With all due respect speaks about love, loneliness, poverty but also the pride of a rich cultural heritage made up of American, European, African and Caribbean elements.
Finnish pianist Jarkko Riihimäki plays a wide range of musical genres with a very personal approach, as on his first album Debutango. Berlin-based Serbian trumpet player Damir Bacikin with the Arzet Quintet Berlin focuses on modern classical music, and an electronic-experimental duo.
The money raised went to the international aid organization Deutsche Welthungerhilfe e.V. (German Agro Action).
