Breaking down barriers: the impact of 1989 on European culture

"After the fall of the Wall cultural institutes have gradually redesigned their main activities from show-casing of national elitist culture to include a broader concept of culture, focusing more on bridge-building, cultural diversity and multiculturalism". President Finn Andersen sumarized the impact of 1989 on cultural policies at the Breaking down barriers conference,
 
 
 
 The conference ,organised by EUNIC in Brussels  in October , at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). Partners were EESC and Culture Action Europe and the Council of Europe within their CultureWatch programme.
 
 
The conference adressed the role of culture, cultural policy and cultural relations in today’s Europe. It  charted a way forward for  cultural players and decision makers in Europe.
 
A capacity audience of more than 300 attended the event. A subsequent one week long film festival, with screenings from all over Europe, each preceded by a debate, drew significant audiences at Flagey hall.
